3rd Chilwell (Inham Nook) Scout Group is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a grant of up to £15,493 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, administered by Broxtowe Borough Council and funded by the UK Government.
The funding will kick-start the first phase of an ambitious development plan named Project Prometheus – a transformative outdoor initiative that includes the creation of a community campfire circle and a covered outdoor learning shelter. Construction is scheduled to take place during the summer holidays, ensuring no disruption to the group’s weekly meetings, with a grand opening celebration planned for October.
Designed to be safe, accessible, and inclusive, the new facilities will benefit not only the Scout Group but also the wider community. The project aims to inspire outdoor engagement, skill-building, environmental awareness, and improved mental wellbeing among young people, volunteers, and local residents.
A First for South West Notts
The campfire circle will feature a central natural stone fire pit, surrounded by permanent log seating. It will be the only dedicated campfire area of its kind in the South West Nottinghamshire district, providing a unique resource for youth groups and community organisations.
The sheltered outdoor learning area will be equipped with a durable canopy, making it usable in all weather. This space is intended for discussions, workshops, informal learning, and community events, providing a flexible and welcoming environment year-round.
Supporting Wellbeing, Skills, and Community
The core aim of Project Prometheus is to offer a permanent space for young people to connect with nature, develop essential life skills, and boost their physical and mental wellbeing. The campfire circle will encourage teamwork, social interaction, and reflection, while the sheltered area will host both educational and social activities in a relaxed, outdoor setting.
Studies consistently show that time spent in nature can significantly enhance mood, reduce stress, and encourage physical activity—this project directly supports those outcomes. The facilities will also be available for use by local schools, youth organisations, and other volunteer-led groups, offering an affordable and accessible venue for a wide range of outdoor activities.
Community Involvement and Lasting Impact
Volunteers from the Scout Group and the local community will play a key role in both the construction and ongoing maintenance of the site, fostering a sense of ownership and pride. By offering a multi-use community hub, the project aims to strengthen local connections and promote community cohesion, bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
This new outdoor space represents a long-term investment in the wellbeing of young people and the wider Chilwell community. It will serve as a valuable asset for years to come, providing countless opportunities for learning, growth, and connection.
